Jasper Johns: Symbolism, Modern Art, Collage, American Flag, Personal Flag

About this lesson

An independent art center's lesson plan using Jasper Johns' flag paintings to teach symbolism: students list the concepts and images that matter to them, sketch and collage a personal flag from chosen symbols, then paint and layer it, finishing with a written reflection on what each color, shape, and material choice means.
